The Hampton style is synonymous with high ceilings, pitched roofs, chimneys, and verandahs. However, to be true to the style these elements when combined require a building height greater than what was permitted on the site. Therefore, the solution was to sink the house into the site. To minimise the apparentness of the reduced site level a gatehouse has been placed at street level through which generous grand steps gradually lead to the verandah. Either side of the steps lies landscaped gardens which soften the approach to the home and assist to disguise the change in level. When designing the reduced site level careful consideration was also paid to minimise the need for retaining walls, which are now only partially required to the front of the property and have been taken advantage of, and disguised, as planter beds.
